Independence Day

The United States celebrates its Independence Day on July 4th. I celebrate my Independence Day on June 1st. Granted, it's not independence from a country, but then again, as far as the blogosphere is concerned, it might as well be. June 1st is the day I celebrate my independence from "Guyana".

Those of you who have been with me since 2005 are probably tired of hearing about "Guyana". For those who haven't been along for the whole ride, the short version of the story is like this: We were friends in high school, lost touch, reconnected after college, dated off and on, had another falling out, reconciled again, and ultimately got engaged. One year ago today, the engagement was called off. I'll spare you the details of that night in this post, but I am sure you can imagine it was a long night.

Since that night I have marinated over the entire situation. I've learned my lessons and prepared myself for the next situation. The relationship was tough, but I survived it, and as the saying goes, what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. I'm a much stronger person than I was a year ago, and that's about the only thing I can thank "Guyana" for. A bad breakup is better than a bad divorce any day of the year. My advice to anyone out there, is make sure you are sure and that the person you're marrying truly accepts you for you. Without that, your relationship is doomed to fail.
